Smoking is Good for a Childs Health
45 million people who live in the United State of America do not have Health Insurance. 9 million of them are children. Yes, it is true that the richest country in the world and, more specifically, those in the executive branch do not believe that access to health care is a birth right.
What happened to the"Compassionate Conservatism" that our President used to tout as his motto. The same President who fights passionately for the "right to life" for unborn children, yet doesn't seem to care once a child is born. I guess once you are out of the womb you have the right to a poor and unhealthy life.
But all is not lost. You can help change this. There is a piece of legislation in Congress that would raise the federal tax on cigarettes and the revenue generated from this tax would go directly to expanding health coverage to 4 million children. It may only help 4 million children but it is a start in the right direction.Ironically, adults who are voluntarily killing themselves on a daily basis would help fund health care for young children whose parents cannot afford health insurance for them.
The State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is a national program in the United States designed for families who earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid, yet cannot afford to buy private insurance. The program was created to address the growing problem of children in the United States without health insurance. At its creation in 1997, SCHIP was the largest expansion of health insurance coverage for children in the United States since Medicaid began in the 1960s. The statutory authority for SCHIP is under Title XXI of the Social Security Act-Courtesy of Wikipedia.
Unfortunately, the "standard-barer" of "Compassionate Conservatism" has threatened to veto such legislation if it make it to his desk. I guess there are limits on compassion, at least where there are insurance companies to look out for.The bill also hopes that an increase the in costs of cigarettes will deter smokers from smoking. However, being the realist that I am, I highly doubt a raise in the price of smokes will deter people from buying their cancer sticks (I WISH IT WOULD). So for those who don't care how much it costs to kill yourself, SMOKE AWAY!!! Your addiction may actually help a young life have a healthy life.
To let you congressperson know how you feel about this piece of legislation you can let he/she know by calling or writing them.

I won't feel as bad when I light up a square. Good Read.
I just read an article from the LA Times, "Are Kids Better Off Unisured"...and it basically speaks to the fact that for children whose health insurance doesn't cover recommended shots, it's better to have no insurance at all.
Free vaccines are available to children who are uninsured or qualify for public insurance. But many states don't help children who have inadequate private insurance.
It read, "Illinois, for example, doesn't provide chickenpox, pneumonia, hepatitis A, human papillomavirus or rotavirus vaccines to kids with insufficient private insurance. The out-of-pocket cost for those vaccines would be $400."
This shows just how messed up we are as a country! We are the wealthiest county in the world, and yet parents are struggling to provide healthcare for their children! And those that have a form of health care, are still having to scramble to pay out of pocket expenses for those shots not covered. It's ridiculous! Children in this country should be taken care of...bottom line! Bush is all about "No Child Left Behind" and yet, millions of children are being left behind because they can't get the Health care they deserve!
I like this new proposal...and I agree...smoke on people...smoke on!
